Making Earth Cool
April 6 -June 6, 2023 Opening Night - First Thursday April 6, 2023 Making Earth Cool Artist in Residency Program was born out of the recognition that Portland has a tremendous need to support its local artists in play, experimentation and place making. Since the cost of space is at such a high premium, even artists who are fortunate enough to have studio space rarely have the opportunity to work in large scale, sculptural ways. This artist residency represents the intersectional approach to playfully make a difference in our world by activating our young change makers and empowering our less recognized neighbors. In a fully immersive handmade setting, Making Earth Cool lead artists have programmed 2.5 months of community activities at Parallax Art Center meant to invite community members to contribute towards environmental protection in small ways and in loud ways. Through repair workshops, informative storytelling, centering indigenous communities and their rights to clean land, youth led activist groups and many calls to action, Making Earth Cool envelopes the community with a joy d’ vie that is reminiscent of legendary AIDS activists ACT UP and their loud and proud yet deeply sincere empowerment of the entire community that lost loved ones to the pandemic. |
OUR BEAUTIFUL & PRECIOUS HOME IS IN TROUBLE. We can all feel it. From heat domes and forest fires to droughts in Eastern Oregon and flooding in Western Oregon, nature’s reaction to human-caused Global Warming is having a huge impact on all of us. It can feel scary and overwhelming, but when we work together as a community, we can make real change and be better prepared to weather the storm. We at Making Earth Cool see the work of local activists, educators and artists to fight Global Warming and want to lift it up. Every act that we do with the health of our Earth in mind, is a step towards a livable future.
OUR WHY: Join us in community building and the sharing of science-backed global warming ideas & facts, an integral part of healing our planet. When we come together to support each other in participating in the work of reversing global warming, we can make real lasting change that creates a future for our children. Our investment in this residency is creating a space for celebration, education and community that we can all continue to access through dark times. Time is running out, but we still have hope and this residency is about keeping that hope alive!
Parallax Art Center amplifies social justice and & environmental protection through inclusive art programs, exhibitions, and experiences. Through their nonprofit gallery in downtown Portland, they approach the space and our programming with a commitment towards inclusivity, altruism, and a de-centered approach that uplifts others. Parallax is committed to creating a space for dialogues about historical and contemporary injustices, not just in the Pacific Northwest, but across the United States and around the world. When art is viewed from multiple audience perspectives, it has the power to forge new connections and ideas that can leverage the lessons of the past to create a more just present and future.
