MARIONETTE BUILDING CLASS
WITH MASTER PUPPET MAKER GEAHK BURCHILL
Course Description:
A complete marionette building class for all skill levels. Whether you have never made dolls or puppets before, or are a master carver, this in-depth woodworking class will teach you how to build a jointed marionette you keep. From character design, through carving faces, to the intricacies of hands and their ability to express emotion, to the fluidity and limits of joints, all the way to stringing and performing with your marionette, Geahk Burchill will guide you through every step.
Included in your class tuition are the materials you will use and several critical tools, including a carving knife, clamp, and coping saw you get to keep, along with patterns and templates so you can continue your puppet making adventure long after the class has ended.

About the instructor, Geahk Burchill
“ I make stuff, it’s what I do. At an intersection between storytelling and engineering. The highly technical as a collision against the animal form. The rigid immalleability of mechanized forces birthed from the adaptive, iterative process of entropic transformation. I tell disquieting stories of transhumanist impulses through a medium of meticulously articulated avatars for fleshy beings, golems meant to convince the living that the inanimate are emotional.
I’m self taught, save for one semester at art college, but was trained and influenced by two artistic parents, while growing up in extreme poverty; a continued issue into adulthood, which expresses itself in my work. Points where I’ve had a choice, I have consistently opted for greater independence, at the cost of security, both financial, and emotional, and part of my work is a continued interrogation of determinism vs free will. I’m fascinated by belief and epistemology. The economics of passion, and motivation, lack and abundance.
I greatly enjoy the self-directed method of creation, by exploring every medium together, without boundaries, as my own diorama of the evolutionary process. History in microcosm; a technological progression by way of tiny theater. To this end, Craft is central to my advancement, as a magpie of material at the delicatessen of technique. The intellectual and intuitive frenemies of the abstract, subterranean and didactic share space in uncomfortable equilibrium. The truth is in the conflict and the fiction is the illuminative instrument.”
