Course Description:
This workshop will teach traditional millinery techniques with a contemporary twist by emphasizing the use of re-purposed items and found objects as affordable, accessible, and environmentally friendly alternatives to often very expensive traditional millinery equipment and supplies. Participants will learn how to hand block and trim a hat on oddball objects like wooden bowls, light fixtures, and candy dishes and will leave class with a completed hat. Some previous sewing experience is helpful but not mandatory to take the class. Materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own items for trimming and decorating their hat.
Students provide their own sewing kit:
Scissors, needle, thread, thimble

About Suzanne Sherman and Fat Cat Hats and Sacks:
"I have been creating hats and other accessories for about 20 years and was originally inspired by my love for vintage clothing. I particularly was infatuated with hats, little wearable sculptures, and I set out to learn traditional millinery techniques. There were no millinery classes where I was living so I bought some books and taught myself. My work just naturally took on a fancy style and I began designing custom pieces for the clients at several bridal salons. I soon added purses to my repertoir and called my business "Fat Cat Hats and Sacks."
